TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. I am number 4 out of 6 kids. I have always been on the move. I used to design my own obstacle courses and my dad had to build a fence to keep me in the yard when I started walking. I played soccer, basketball, tennis, cross country, and fast pitch softball. I joined the army after high school and that is where I met Steph Cohee. I followed Steph out to Portland and the rest is history!
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START CROSSFIT? WHY DO YOU DO IT NOW?
When I joined the power line clearance tree trimmer apprenticeship program, I realized I wasn’t in “good enough shape” to be successful. Chelsea Denigan and Steph Cohee had tried for years at this point, to get me to try CrossFit. I FINALLY gave in and fell in love with it.
I do CrossFit today because I am slightly vain and it rehabs my body from my job. Tree trimming is very hard on the body and it is a lot of repetition. Our bodies are our paycheck and our careers. Plus, I would like to retire at 55 (big dreams) and I want my body not to be broken.
YOUR THOUGHTS AFTER YOUR 1st WOD?
“Holy shit!” I feel in love with CrossFit instantly!
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?
That it is different every time I walk in there. I love the small community in our tiny gym. Also, it’s never competitive, always encouraging.
YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
My 105lb snatch. I am in my head a lot with the snatch, but I am very proud of that moment.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
Favorite: Pull-ups, bar muscle ups, toes to bar, smash ball, etc.
Least favorite: weighted lunges and wall balls.
WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOU IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
My wife says I look good in a bikini. Hahaha!
Most of the impact has to do with my job.
WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE?
The more consistent my workout schedule is the better my diet is. Aka, I eat less sugar. I eat a lot!
IF YOU CREATED A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
Lots of gymnastic movements.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY?
“Movement is life” Brad Pitt in that zombie movie. We are NOT designed to sit.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE NEW TO CROSSFIT OR THINKING OF GIVING IT A TRY?
Find the right gym for you! I think this is the most important. There are so many different types of CrossFit gyms in Portland. I don’t believe that CrossFit should have injuries. However, there is a difference between preventable injuries and non-preventable injuries.
WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS?
Prior gym experience was me going to 24 hour fitness and doing whatever I felt like doing. I tried class pass for awhile, it was nice to try some different things but most of it “entry level” movements and I was bored.
HOW HAS CROSSFIT MADE YOU FEEL MORE PREPARED FOR DAILY LIVING?
Well, I can do cartwheels now. Before that was a struggle. It also helps with my funny dance videos. But mainly, my job. I can not preach enough about how CrossFit has helped me with trimming trees. I still have not found a movement in CrossFit that I don’t use at work.
