TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
I grew up in Eugene, OR. The funny thing, several of my high school classmates are into CrossFit too. Anne and I moved to Boston, MA for graduate school in 1998, and I graduated from The Institute of Health Professions in Boston, MA, with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. We moved back to Portland after graduate school and we now have 2 amazing girls, Mia – 11 and Sophia -7. I now work for Providence as an analyst, after moving away from patient care which I did for 12 years or so. We live in North Tabor. I have been doing CrossFit for about 5 years, and have loved every minute of it!
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START CROSSFIT? WHY DO YOU DO IT NOW?
I used to think that no one but weightlifters needed to squat below parallel. I was terribly out of shape and struggling for motivation. I started training at 24 HR Fitness with Chelsea, and she gradually talked me out of the pool and into CrossFit. It took her a while to convince me to start joining Coach Weaver’s classes, but once I did , I Loved the competitive, yet friendly spirit of them.
I continue to do CrossFit because I LOVE the pain! (kidding). But really, I love the hard, intense workouts, that allow you to push yourself as hard as you want to mentally and physically. I love the flat out exhausted feeling you get after cranking through a workout like Karen or Lumberjack 20. And most of all, I love feeling good about my level of fitness and not worrying about climbing some stairs.
YOUR THOUGHTS AFTER YOUR 1st WOD?
I thought I was going to die! But at the same time, I loved it and felt a rush of endorphins for sure!
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?
I enjoy the variation of CrossFit workouts, and the fact that they are scalable and variable, so I can push myself as much as I want. I also really enjoy the collegiality of the classes at Torque.
YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
Wow, there are many, but I would have to say, hitting my 417lb Deadlift last February is one of my proudest moments.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
Least favorite: Double Unders, because they are in my head, and I’m still struggling with hitting more than one or two at a time….
WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOU IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
I feel good about my health, I am a better person because I workout regularly. I enjoy the discipline to embrace the “suck” that CrossFit helps instill.
WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE?
Generally, we lean toward a Paleo-ish diet, with a heavy focus on fresh vegetables, grass-fed meats when available, shellfish… And of course, one can never have enough Bacon! I drink some alcohol, but in moderation.
IF YOU CREATED A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
500M Row, 10 Power Snatch, 10 Med Ball V-ups,
10 push ups, 10 squats
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY?
You have to do mobility. The workouts we do are very intense and full body. It’s super important, for me, to perform mobility after workouts to maintain flexibility and the ability to keep exercising.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE NEW TO CROSSFIT OR THINKING OF GIVING IT A TRY?
Do Not be intimidated by anything anyone else in the Box is doing. Everyone works at a different level and that’s okay. It is as hard as you want to make it, so come and have fun and give it a chance, I think you will enjoy it!
WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS?
CrossFit incorporates movements from multiple sources from gymnastics, Olympic Weightlifting, running, swimming, cross training. The variation and ability to scale workouts is unique and makes it more exciting than many other programs out there.
HOW HAS CROSSFIT MADE YOU FEEL MORE PREPARED FOR DAILY LIVING?
It’s the little things in life, like carrying all 6 bags of groceries into the house in 1 trip. I also don’t worry about not being able to lift or move anything around the house. Confidence and endurance to do what I want to do is the ultimate take away.
